My Magna after 2 days of being idle is extremely hard to start and after the winter it is a real chore, not sure this is the bike or just my bike. I didn't mind I wanted a safe bike and I now know all that is done. The guy selling it worked on bikes and assured me it would running right when I rode it off and it was, but that is kind of a special situation, I got a pretty good deal but even after it was running, I had to put fork seals in, tires and brake work which at the age of the bike your considering will probably will all need to be done, that would be $800 to $1000 if you have someone do it. Like some one mentioned buying a non running bike can be dangerous unless it might be from your best friend that would be honest with you. In fact it did happen and I had no chance, I am much more careful about those kind of turns and pretty much walk it around.

The first time I rode my 300 after I got my license I took a slow turn too sharp and it started to go, I was able to catch it which as a miracle but I now ride a 750 Magna and there would be no way I could stop that from going over if I had to. This is a powerful bike and a lot heavier than the aforementioned smaller bikes. IMHO, your would be better off riding a 250 or 300 for a season. The first thing I thought of was this is too much bike for a beginner. There's also no way you can see if it's missing any of the gears or popping out of any of them at higher RPM's. Should be about half that in a non-running state. Hopefully, you're not paying anywhere over 5 bills for it. The value of a bike non-running is reduced by more than half. "Running 6 months ago" could mean anything from carb cleaning to a bad stator to loss of compression in any of the four cylinders to a bad spark box. Unlike it's shaft driven bigger brothers, the 500 is chain driven, so chain maintenance is one addition to the list.
Valve clearances are easy enough as well. Search youtube for Magna Carb Installation. Carb removal is easy enough, but installation can be a trick. Never spray starter fluid into the intake as it can eat up the diaphragms. The risky part is that the diaphragms are no longer available for many of the 1st generation Magna's. You will probably need to clean the carbs. They usually end up looking less like the bike the person wanted and more like a a parts bike with blinkers.

I would suggest this model bike to anyone very easy to learn on and comfortable to ride.Due to their design, Magna's aren't the friendliest bikes to mod into bobbers or rats. The brakes could use an upgrade, but overall this is in my opinion one of the easiest bikes to work on and own, considering the age and value ratio. My wife is scared of it and I am too, but that is the fun. When you get this bike past 4,000 rpms, it really throws you off the seat. I love the Mad Max cruiser look, but it runs like a crotch rocket. This bike is the second bike I own the other is my wife's cruiser. The accelerator cable broke, and was easily replaced. The carborators needed cleaning, and it was difficult with the V-4 design getting them back on the bike.

The seat is cracked in many places, and I am going to re-upholster it. The front brakes were locked up, so I just sanded the pistons a little and cleaned up the inside of the caliper, and it is cherry now. The shift shaft seal leaks oil, but not badly. I fixed the problem by replacing the seals in the forks, which were 12 dollars.
When I first bought the bike, I noticed that the front forks were leaking fluid. It really comes into its own after about 5000 RPM - takes off like a rocket. The V4 is so silky-smooth, it surprises you with its power. Brakes could be a bit better - a rear disc brake rather than drum would have been better. Love the handling and the bike is very comfortable. It accelerates like a modern liter bike - the power that the V4 500cc motor produces is amazing. In my opinion, they were the best looking bikes that Honda ever built.
I knew that I would never own a V65, since I would probably kill myself on it, but the V30 has that classic bad boy "power cruiser" look that made the Magna bikes famous back in the mid 80s. My dream bike since 1983 when I was a senior in high school was the Honda V65 Magna. They also drained the coolant and added fresh. Took a trip to the local Honda dealer to get those items fixed, but other than that, just a battery was all it needed. Clutch master and slave cylinders were shot. The bike sat for 3 years since it was last on the road, so the carbs were gummed and rusted up when I bought it from the previous owner.
